French Reactions to Jenner's Discovery of Smallpox Vaccination: The Primary Sources
* Haven House, Granville Road, St. Margaret's Bay, Dover, Kent CT18 6DR, UK.
SUMMARY The news of Jenner's discovery of vaccination came to France in 1799, after a century in which, despite severe outbreaks of smallpox, the benefits of variolation (the inoculation of true smallpox virus) had been scarcely appreciated. The popular enthusiasm with which the vaccine was received resulted in an official programme encouraging its use and numerous monographs on the subject, which are listed in the Appendix.
